Sharing – A Story & Activity Book About Kindness, Friendship and Taking Turns
Ages 4–7 | Story & Activities | Supports EYFS & Key Stage 1 Learning
EYFS & Key Stage 1 Relevance
Join Phoebe and Thumper in a warm and colourful story about friendship, kindness and learning to share.
When Phoebe and Thumper discover an enormous carrot, Thumper would rather keep it all for himself. With a little help from his friend, he begins to discover that sharing, taking turns and thinking about other people’s feelings can make friendship even more special.
But Sharing is much more than a story.
Once the story is finished, children can enjoy a substantial collection of colourful activities designed to encourage them to look, think, point, choose, talk and learn through play.
📚 Supports Early Learning
Sharing has been designed to complement areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and provide useful learning opportunities relevant to children moving into Key Stage 1.
There is particular emphasis on Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), including:
- Building Relationships – friendship, helping, sharing, cooperation and including others.
- Self-Regulation – waiting, taking turns and thinking about feelings.
- Managing Self – making positive choices and developing an understanding of appropriate behaviour.
- Communication and Language – talking about the story, answering questions, explaining choices and practising useful phrases such as “Can I have a turn, please?”
- Literacy and comprehension – remembering events, discussing characters and identifying what happened first.
For children entering Key Stage 1, these activities also complement learning around relationships, respectful behaviour, speaking and listening, comprehension and recognising emotions.
🎯 Story + Activities in One Book
After enjoying Phoebe and Thumper’s story, children can try activities including:
Who Is Sharing? • How Does Phoebe Feel? • What Can We Share? • Sharing or Snatching? • What Makes a Good Friend? • Can I Have a Turn? • Ask Before You Take • Whose Turn Is Next? • Can We Play Together? • Thumper’s Friendship Challenge
There are also off-screen activities, encouraging children to practise sharing and turn-taking in real life and make their own Friendship Box.
The book finishes with a cheerful Sharing Makes Us Smile song, helping reinforce the book’s key messages through rhyme and repetition.
❤️ More Than Simply “You Must Share”
An important part of the book is helping children understand that being kind isn’t simply about giving things away.
Children are also encouraged to ask before taking something belonging to somebody else, wait for their turn, recognise other people’s feelings and invite others to join in.
The story ultimately reinforces the message that sharing and kindness can make friendship more special.
💻 Designed for Digital Reading
Activities have been designed specifically for a digital book. Children can point, choose, answer and talk about what they see rather than needing to write or draw on the screen.
For younger children, Sharing is particularly suitable as a Read Together Book, giving a parent, grandparent, carer or educator opportunities to talk about each situation with the child.
